Opera House in the Amazon

I arrived in Manaus late Friday night. Saturday morning, the first thing I saw was the Opera House, around the corner from my hotel.


Not something you would expect in an equatorial town, it was completed in 1896, at the height of the rubber boom, and no expenses were spared. Wrought iron came from Glasgow, glass and marble from Italy, screen paintings from France and the painted ceramic tiles on the dome from Alsace.
